A further objective of this project was to develop timelines as the organizing principle on both sides of the project and web site. Researchers will be able to access books, journals, manuscripts, documents, photographs, art, and audio and video representations, documenting many aspects of the history of social welfare in the United States on the one side and comparable sources, documenting the unique and less visible history of social welfare provision within African American communities. Significant emphasis in the initial phase of the project, emphasis has been placed on documents from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The extension of the timelines with associated digitized sources and other media is planned.
