The Waterloo Missionary Society was founded in 1817 by individuals who were for the most part members of the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches. See the History of Seneca County for biographical information about most of the members. One member, Isaac Rosa "came with the first settlers as master mechanic, and built the Waterloo flour and grist mill for Reuben Swift and Co/ He was also the first master of the masonic lodge the same year the missionary society was founded.
