Lafayette as Commander of the Parisian National Guard (Circular medal,, goldened bronze, 32 mm) (15)
Updated version of the preceding medals, with a different legend on the reverse: Objet tour a tour d'idolâtrie et de haine on ne se rappelle aujourd'hui que ses malheurs et les services qu'il a rendus à la liberte des deux mondes. According to Olivier, (Iconographie..., p. 14), this medal was part of a program sponsored by First Consul Bonaparte, aimed at glorifying certain aspects of the French Revolution (in a letter to the Interior Minister, his brother Lucien, on 8 August 1802: "Il serait convenable de faire frapper des medailles pour toutes les operations importantes de la Revolution.") Similar medals depicted Bonaparte himself, late generals Desaix and Kleber, Bailly (a former mayor of Paris, guillotined in 1793), Alexandre de Beauharnais (Josephine's first husband, guillotined in 1794), as well as Vice-Consuls Cambaceres and Lebrun. The fact that a medal with Lafayette's effigy was struck [by Lienard] shows both Lafayette's intact prestige (though ten years had passed since 1792), and Bonaparte's efforts to attach him to his views and interests. White.
