The manuscripts are the first two drafts of a technical essay entitled "Precis d'un projet de cadastre perpetuel", written in 1787 by Babeuf, then a "feudist" in Picardy, in response to Minister Calonne's proposal for a general land tax. The first draft is in the hand of Babeuf but lacks about fourteen pages in the middle of the text. The second draft is in secraterial hand with additions by the author, and it is complete. A greatly expanded version of the work was published in late 1789, the year Babeuf drafted the cahier de doleances for the electors of the bailliage of Roye, demanding the abolition of feudal rights.
