A native of Vienna, Hermann Herrey was educated in Vienna and Berlin, and worked as a stage designer in Germany and England before coming to the United States in 1940, at the invitation of Walter Gropius. Herrey adapted and rewrote modern and classical plays and translated other plays into English and German; designed stage sets and costumes; and lectured at colleges and universities, including Harvard University, McGill University, Yale University, Queens College and The American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
