Collection Scope and Content Note
Forty-four letters from C.R. Gross to members of his family concerning
his service with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I and
afterward with the army of occupation in Luxembourg, including comments on army
life, work in a 33rd Division field hospital, devastation caused by military
operation in Lorraine and northeastern France, conditions on troop ships,
reactions to the cessation of hostilities, the situation in France during the
half year following the Armistice, his studies at the University of Paris, and
related matters. Also included are three newspapers, eleven monographs on
agricultural chemistry, postcards, and other printed items.
