Collection Scope and Content Note
Business and personal papers of the North and related families of
Walton and Unadilla, New York; included are correspondence and accounts of Mary
North (1814-66) and her first husband, Roswell Wright (1816-30); estate and
guardianship papers; and personal correspondence (1833-56). Papers of Dr. Henry
E. Bartlett, Mary North's second husband, a physician and Democratic
politician, include letters, resolutions, and reports concerning his
chairmanship of the New York State Senate railroad committee; correspondence,
notices, reports, monthly statements, landing permits, immigrants' bonds,
quarantine instructions, and other papers relating to his appointment as Health
Officer of the Port of New York (1854-55); reminiscences of Bartlett's early
life in Massachusetts and Stanstead, Quebec, and his early years of medical
study; his notes of Dr. Valentine Mott's medical lectures (1826); papers
concerning business ventures in which the Wrights or Bartletts were interested;
and numerous bills, accounts, and related items.
Also, one volume of farm accounts, inventory, and property appraisal
of the Casper Metzgar (Metzger) estate; correspondence, legal documents,
specifications, and accounts pertaining to the financing , construction, and
subsequent ownership of a bridge built across the Susquehanna by the Sidney
Bridge Company (1823-53); papers concerning the sale of Delaware and Otsego
County butter by Camp and Welles, New York City produce commission merchants;
correspondence, right-of-way contracts, and other legal papers of the New York
and Oswego Midland Railroad (1868-71); and miscellaneous pamphlets, broadsides,
and other printed materials.
